At Christmas 2001 I went to Turkey to visit friends. From Istanbul I took the bus to Silifke on the Mediterranean coast.
The journey to Silifke was fun. My traveling companion wanted to take her dog to Silfike, where it could live more comfortably. Dogs are not allowed to travel on buses, so we had to smuggle her aboard. We drugged her with some stuff from the vet, but it didn't last long and soon we had a squirming little dog wrapped in coats. It's got to be a ten hour journey. Eventually we arrived in Silifke safely and, if anyone had noticed the dog, they said nothing.
Silifke has some interesting attractions. A Roman temple and a bridge, a crusaders' fort, a martyr's grotto and lots of strange old motor bikes.
Unfortunately, when I visited the crusaders' castle overlooking Silifke, it was late and I did
not have my camera. So there are no photos.
The martyr is St. Thecla,
who was a follower of St. Paul. The camera ran out of film there. I'm not
always so badly prepared, honest.
